I thought Fort Walton Beach was west of the East Pass. I’m staying off of Gulf Shore Drive about 1.5 miles east of the Jetties but not Miramar (I was told this was Paradise Isle). Is that the area you are talking about or is it still ok? I’ll be there Saturday.
Fort Walton is West of East Pass & Destin. If you are staying in Destin/Sand-destin there is very little effect on the beaches. Only random tar balls this afternoon & they were few & far between. If they are present, they are easily seen & you simply step over them. The beaches off of Gulf Shore drive are open. No oil smell in the air. Of course, this can change & I will continue to give updates until we leave Saturday.
we will be at nautilus on ft walton beach next thursday. how bad is it there right now? is the beach open?
We’re supposed to check in at Emerald Isle on Monday. How’s it looking down there today? Can you smell it? Are the tar balls becoming larger? Our realtor said he would refund us the money if the oil were there. I’m just wondering if we should still plan on coming down there? I know there’s no way of predicting what it will look like by Monday or the rest of next week. I feel horrible for even being concerned about vacation when you consider everything that people have lost down there or will lose in the coming months.
We will be at Maravilla in Miramar Beach area this weekend. Is that area okay?
My family is planning to leave for Destin this Saturday the 19th of June. We are staying on Gulf Shore Drive. I am extremely nervous about the condition of the beach. We have not been on a vacation for years and my youngest child is so excited about playing on the beach. Should we cancel? This may be the only vacation we will have for a while. Thanks for keeping us posted. It is nice to have a site to go to.
My wife found this link on her facebook page from Fort Walton. Not pretty.

Hopefully this isn’t coming Destin’s way.
If you want to stay in Miramar, we have a house for rent. Check out vrbo.com

we are in Miramar beach off Norwood dr. Oil in Harbour but no oil on beach as of yesterday. Seaweed is heavy but I will take that over oil. Headed out today and will post. Has been a beautiful week.
I am getting married in Miramar beach at Tops’L Resort on June 26th….do you think the beaches will be closed by then?
I think you should be fine and it will be clear water if that changes i will let you know
Miramar Beach is Beautiful. I have seen no oil effects on the beach or water all week so far. We are lucky to sit in toward the coast more than other areas along the gulf. Gulf Shores Alabama is devastated by the oil spill. It has also began to devastate Pensacola Florida and Fort Walton Beach. I am kind of worried because Fort Walton Beach is only 6 miles from Destin. I will go out on a waverunner this afternoon to see how close the oil is to the Destin Beaches and Destin Pass. I will update this afternoon.
Brad– I think you are referring to “Holiday Isle”
Tina– I have personally witnessed hundreds upon hundreds of Tarballs at Fort Walton Beach. I wish I had better news for you.
thanks send pictures if you can and let us know what area you are in like a name of condo so we can id the areas for people thanks for taking the time to let us know
Fort Walton Beach at Noon Time Today June 18th is an Oil Spill Disaster. It is not safe to be on the Beach or in The Water. The Beaches of Fort Walton are closed to swimmers and it is not safe to walk near the shore due to the oil and chemicals used to disperse the oil. These chemicals are very harmful to your health. Please stay away from this area until it has been cleaned up and cleared by the Coast Guard.
I have just returned from the Gulf @ Destin Pass and also a ride out into the Gulf of Mexico out from Holiday Isle, Mid Destin, Destiny by The Sea, and Miramar Beach. Oil is approaching Destin Pass about 1 1/4 Miles out, Holiday Isle the oil is a little closer–maybe a mile out, same with mid-Destin,—- Destiny by The Sea and Miramar Beach oil is about 2 miles from the shore. All these areas have several thick oil slicks and thousands of small tar balls just 1-2 miles off shore. These areas of oil seem to be creeping slowly toward the beaches. I witnessed thousands of black tar balls and black oil slicks and orange colored oil slicks in the Gulf of Mexico all slowly approaching the Beaches of Destin and Miramar Beach. Ft. Walton Beach just 6 Miles up the coast was devastated all day yesterday with literally hundreds of thousands of oil tar balls and oil slicks. These beaches are unsafe to occupy or swim at. I did talk to a coast guard vessel and they informed me they do expect the oil to reach all the Destin and surrounding area beaches this weekend. I will be out @ 7:00 am on Saturday June 19th for my next update @ Noon. Let us all pray for our beautiful Emerald Coast!! Thank You!!

Thanks for the update on FWB. I am so disappointed and so disgusted!! We are staying at a friend’s condo for free there. Do you think it’s still worth going and just doing other things or do you think the whole trip would be ruined by this? We thought of going on a dolphin cruise. Are they even running? Are they seeing dolphins? I just hate this; words cannot even describe how awful it is.
Oil is not the problem..,it’s the June Grass!!
We stayed on miramar beach and the “June grass” was so thick and slimy and when u get out of the water your covered in it. The shoreline is bright green where it has washed up. It was three foot deep in some areas! Locals say it’s the worst they had seen! It was really sad…I have never seen the Destin beach look like this and our kids are calling it the nasty beach

Saturday, June 19. Just got in from the beach at Azure on Okaloosa Island. The water was clear with a little June grass, and tar balls littered the high tide line, but the sand above (and the shoreline where the waves were breaking) was clean. At about 2:30 clean up crews set up on either side of us and started cleaning the high tide mark. The waves were great, there was no smell, etc. We made sandcastles up the beach. The health department has cleared the water and it is safe to swim.
Great site. A lot of useful information here. I’m sending it to some friends!
i am from arkansas and we were planing on leaving sturday erley to get to sea island princes and i would like to know if there is any oil there yet so if you would please leave a comment
It is clear on Okaloosa Island for now some tarballs have been there and might see small amounts while staying here
We are leaving on July 4th to go to Fort Walton. We are staying at Destin West Beach and Bay Resort. WHat is the condition of the water and beach in front of this resort and area?
currently it is clear the beaches are white very little june grass watch the okaloosa island post should be here in the am about 1/4 a mile from there
My family is supposed to leave for the Destin area July 24th. We are staying along highway 30-A Seaside beaches. We are driving from Missouri and are also concerned whether we should continue with our plans. We are getting conflicting stories and reports. What are the conditions around 30-A on the beaches?
They are currently clear cut and paste the link below and see the water report and air reports are also clear. There might be sporadic tarballs in all areas but we will video Seaside this week and post for you

We are going to visit the Islander at Ft Walton Beach from 23 July thru 28 July. We were told that if the beaches were closed we could get a refund. Is there an order of oil in the air and or there any tar ball on the beach? Thanks
The islander is clear and no smell of oil
My husband and I were at the Destin Fort Walton area last week of July. The beaches were beautiful with no oil smell or feel in the water. I think people should come down and support the gulf coast business people. They are hurting because of this. We debated whether to go and and while we were there on one day saw a section of the beaches being cleaned. Helicopters were in the air and you could see the skimmers from where we were. But the beaches and the water for the most part were great as were the people. I am glad we went and will try to do so again.
