Destin oil spill update

With the post below and talking to some captains in the area, the oil spill is still out from Destin.

There are crews working to skim and collect the oil alot of boats are in service with BP from the Destin harbor.

Alot of people don’t know this, we have one of the largest commercial fishing fleets in Florida and many of them are working on spill trying to protect Florida waters.

There are not predictions to have oil mats or larger sheens come into the Destin area.  There is a possibility of weathered oil not likely to cause a beach closure.

The weather will always be a factor and we will get videos of the beach for you.

Florida Department of Enviromental Protection

Relatively weak winds (below 10 knots), low seas (below 2 feet) and low rain chances are expected to continue through the next 3 days, which will be favorable for surface oil recovery operations.

However, winds are expected to continue out of the south-southwest for the next three days, pushing portions of the oil plume towards the western Florida Panhandle.

Reconnaissance missions are ongoing. On June 14, as of noon, light sheen, streamers of weathered oil and tar balls were detected within five miles of Pensacola Pass still a distance from Destin

Just found this site. Thanks for all the infomation. We will be vacationing at Okaloosa Island but not until late August. (21-28) I will keep checking this site for updates. These updates seem better and more acurate than what you see on the news.
Hope the oil stays away for the sake of everyone.

He is a e-mail from someone I work with that is in Destin right now:

So far no oil. Actually it’s been really nice, just hot. The beach is beautiful. Absolutely no smell. They’re saying it will eventually get here, just don’t know when.

We’re going to PCB on Sunday and will be at the last condo to the east.

Thank you all for the updates. We are heading that way in a couple of weeks and hope they have some kind of clean up that works and they can save most of the beaches for the sake of everyone there year round. Hopefully Kevin Costner’s idea will work, nothing esle has.

Can you provide an update regarding oil today? The biggest reason is this: if you check the NOAA 24 hour trajectories it projects shored oil for TODAY. (From the reports on the 13). I figured looking at the actual oil / tar / sheen towards or on the beach today will give an example of how accurate the NOAA trajectories are.

    Thx!

At a condo near Henderson Beach State park. Clear water, a little seaweed, and no oil smell. So far so good.

Thank you for the information you’ve been giving. I arrived here Sunday. It is absolutely gorgeous. There are no signs of oil at all in Destin. The water looks like it always does this time of year. There was a little bit of seaweed Sunday and Monday, but today, Tuesday, most of it’s gone. It’s crystal clear. If I could post a picture I would. It’s hard to imagine that the oil is lurking out there somewhere. I’m going to keep on praying that it will spare Destin and Panama City.

We are/were planning on the Emerald Grande for the poker run in mid-August. If I am understanding everything correcly, the chances of oil in the water/on beaches will be much greater by then. Damn shame, we have been going to Destin for countless years and have always enjoyed every part of the area. My sympathies to all those employed in the hospitalty and fishing industries that will be affected by this disaster.

In Sandestine now. No oil or oil smell, but the water is full of seaweed – it is so thick it is like wading through pea soup. Many people are staying away from the beach. I hear other parts of beaches nearby are much better with less seaweed. Some are saying this is normal for this time of the year, some say it is the oil spill pushing the seaweed toward land, other say no one knows what is causing it. It is pretty unpleasant though. We are praying the oil stays away! It is has still been fun to be hear and we are glad we came and did not cancel our plans.
